At the end of our block was the UW-M Preschool, which Matthew attended from age 8 months through 3 years. He started out with a few hours twice a week when he was very little, to a big part of 4 days as he approached 3. We have fond memories of walking there together, with him riding on me at first, then when he turned 1 year, he walked by himself. On our route there is where he said his first word, "touch," as we stopped to touch the bushes, and where he learned to walk.

When Matthew turned one year old, with his baby bike seat and moon-baby bike helmet, we made a biking due and trio.
In the summer of 1983, toward the end of our Milwaukee days, we got our first computer - - a Commodore 64. At this same time, Duncan's professional interests increasingly were turning away from working in government agencies, and instead were moving toward the field of business. After a year of exploration which included taking evening courses on entreupeneurship at UW-M, he proposed we move to Washington, DC for him to work in international trade. Matthew, age 3, and I were heartbroken to leave our good buddies. But it was also an alluring prospect.
So off we went.
1984-1989 Washington, DC
We lived in the city for 5 years and made a lot more good buddies.
Duncan worked in international trade firms traveled a lot, and we learned even more about computers and high-tech stuff.

Matthew from age 3-8 participated in the early childhood and elementary programs at the Maharishi Childrens School, where all the students, faculty, staff and parents were TM meditators.
In 1986, I founded the Environmental Education field trip program for this school, and in two years took kids on 150 expeditions to find out how the DC area ticked. See Environmental Education Field Trip Program.
